I need your VOTE - Should I grow it back?
As many of you know, I’ve had a bit of facial hair for as long as I can remember. Well… I got home today after 4 weeks on the road speaking at different events and I decided to shave it off! Look here for the results - It may shock you!
Like I said, I shaved off my beard/goatee or whatever you want to call it. I’ve even chronicled the shave for a bit of fun.
Here’s the pic with me before the process began…
Here’s a pic of me HALF way through.
Here’s a pic before the big unveiling…
The final result - A clean shaven face!!
It’s time to vote - voice your opinion!.

Yo Armand,
Missed you in Aus this time around, but I suppose there with always be another time…right?
On the mo/facial hair issue, I prefer pre-shaved Armand, he’s got a lot more mystery about him…(and i suppose at th eend of the day it’ll be up to your wife)
either way though like your work…

You are always the consummate marketing genius - I love it! Not the shaving part… just the genius side of you.
And which side would that really be? I actually think that you should have two sides and left it half on and half off. That way when we look at you from one side you could be Armand Morin and looking at you from the other side you could be… none other than Michael Lee Austin!
Way to go Dude its nice to see you come out of the closet!
Yes or No? That is the question… I’m sure Marianna will be THE ONE to answer for all of us. Especially since we are all going to be “emailing” her now. (nice hat!)
Hang in there Marianna - you’ve got your hands full!

Wow, that’s pretty wild.
I’m thinking you should go with what Debra said, Keep half of it shaved and let the other half grow out.
Robin is right though about that many images of you on the internet. Then again, we could create a product called Image Swap Generator.
Thanks for sharing. By the way, I loved your post about the Art of Product Development being gone.

Grow it back - but before you do, experience the wonder that is stubble. Only shaving once or twice a week - and getting away with it because people just consider it your own cool look- is like the greatest freedom ever.
Except when you let it go for too long and then when you shave the electric razor kind of grabs and yanks at parts. That’s not so fun.
But that’s really the only downside.

I love ya, man, but - no joke - my 5-year-old has literally grown up lovin’ the goatee, and she instantly cried when I told her you shaved it off.
She won’t sleep…
She won’t eat…
She says life isn’t worth living anymore…
Ok, none of that is true, but she did cry.
So, what’s next….
Jim Edwards in a suit?
Michel Fortin with writer’s block?
Ralph Zuranski without a camera?

Armand,
While you look fine without it (and, in general, I prefer clean-shaven faces), your beardless face has a soft round baby quality to it. It makes you look a great deal younger - practically post-pubescent. (Lordy! What’s Michael Lee going to do with you?)
I think your image requires your face fuzz because it gives your particular face gravitas, authority, and maturity. Hot damn!
So, be comfortable and clean-shaven kicking back in the summer sun but consider THE essential, sophisticated, kick-ass Armand Morin image for the Fall.

I have been a magician most of my life, and magician’s with beards, usually the goatee type, always looked the most mysterious.
It added character to your face, Armand, but it’s summer, and I guess it can be hot with a beard. It had become part of your “image”.
A friend of mine in real estate, regularly shaves it off for the summer and then grows it back for the winter, but then - it can be damn cold here in Canada!
Do I think you should have shaved it off? Not really, but hey, it’s not my beard and you may have other reasons for removing it.

Ya know, Marianna’s father once agreed to do a musical, but the only catch was he had to shave his beard off for the role he wanted… He was fantastic as the representative for the colony of Maryland in “1776.”
Wonder if there’s more to this debate than meets the eye…
ANYWAY, my two cents’ worth is: grow it back! You just don’t look like yourself without the goatee. And by the way, why hasn’t Marianna weighed in here on the blog with her opinion?? (Or is she too busy answering email?) LOL =)

My friend Armand, honestly, with or without it doesn’t matter since you’ve got great idea for your products. Now if I look at you on the picture I prefer you unshaved. Why, you should know, it’s written in your marketing tips: Brand a name, brand your product…. when people look at the yellow M (my 3 years son too knows it) they know that’s the famous burger Mc D….
So Armand Morin have always been unshaved and short hair cut (I suggest you to cut your hair like before too) on all your headers, products, seminars pictures….
Now if you want to retire like some hollywood stars, then live it shaved.
Have a nice day.

I don’t normally get involved in these things, however, to me the difference is so distinct and obvious that I’ve got to weigh in on the matter here. The moustache and goatee convey a very strong sense of maturity and professionalism that the look without them does not.
While I realize that this may simply be some sort of publicity stunt to get folks to respond, and perhaps you intend to grow the facial hair back in any case. If so, then you got me…
However, if you’re really not sure of any reason to return to the goatee/moustache look, I will offer this: I believe it enhances your personal image, and is a more sophisticated look.
I can only hope you consider these aspects seriously…

I think you should grow it back. It helps balance your face, unlike MY goatee which just makes me look weird. It grows faster than I can pluck it and I’m not willing to live with a five oclock shadow from shaving. After all, a five oclock shadow isn’t very feminine.

Armand,
Grow it back. It’s your branding. However I do agree we need to see you in a suit to really compare the look.
You could always create Instant Goateee Generator, but Marianne gets to control whether the goatee is on or off as she sees fit!
Of course the half & half looks cool too. Just match it with the sunburn from Close Encounters and you’ll have a look nobody can forget.

Armand,
Bill and I had been together for 9 years and I had only ever known him with his goatee. He got a wild hair one day and decided to shave it off. OH MY GOODNESS was I anxious for the hair to grow back! He just didnt look right without the goatee. People didnt want to take him seriously because him with a clean face just didnt look right. Grow it back, it makes you who you are IMHO. Now of course he still shaves his head, says he’s much cooler without all the hair up there. So maybe thats your answer. Grow back the goatee and shave your head.

But seriously, like I said before, some will like some wont, some will note what I have already noted, but in the end, its really all up to you now, isn’t it, that is unless you have a wife, then, well you know. Real men are clean shaven. Don’t grow it back. You are a hottie without it!
FURTHERMORE, I don’t trust men with beards, mustaches, goatees, or whatever it’s called. When I deal with a man, I want to READ his face and all that vegetation hides who he really is.
FURTHERMORE, since we all know men are not the tidiest of God’s creatures, facial hair is a health hazard. When you see a mess of gross hair on a guy’s face you have to wonder if it’s harboring the remains of last year’s turkey gravy. Or worse.

The facial hair does make you look very dignified and distinctive. Without it, your visual branding may take a temporary “hit”, but your name already is well known.
Just send out a picture reflecting you decision so that I do recognize you next time I see you. Here is to whatever choice you and your wife make! Kudos for your charitable efforts.
Best regards, Carolyn

Hi Armand,
You’ve gotten LOTS of interesting comments! My 2 comments would be: 1)I used to have a beard and shaved it off because IT became grey and it made me look older! You are CLOSE to the age I was when I shaved mine off!
2)You would have to CHANGE all of those pics that are ALL OVER the net!
And my BONUS comment reflects what a few others have said, beards DO cover up double chins! Your goatee was trimmed so perfectly that it did make you look very distinguished!
I applaud that you and Michael are doing this to raise awareness and money to FIGHT cancer! That is a WONDERFUL thing, so keep up the GOOD work-no matter what you decide to do about the beard!

Reminds me of a funny story. My ex-husband had a mustache….that was the only face I knew. One morning he was getting ready for a trip, came into the living room all dressed in his uniform (He was a pilot with Delta, and leaving on a 4 day trip.) WEll, what a shock! It was his voice, but it came from this strange face! He said, “Well, how do you like the new me?” And then left! I worried for 4 days if I would love the “new me.” I mean, it didn’t even remotely resemble the familiar face I knew. And no, that’s not what caused the divorce!
THe point? It doesn’t look like you, and, I’m sure we would get used to it if you decide to remain clan shaven. My vote? I like the beard.

I think the beard should be asked how it’s getting on now that your face has been seperated from it. Has it lost it’s sense of purpose? Does it feel lonely or liberated? Is it difficult to get a seat in a decent restaurant? Life can be tough for a beard when it doesn’t have a famous face behind it. Shame on you for treating your faithful beard in such a heartless way. I am moved to open up a refuge where discarded beards can live out the remainder of their lives in peace and dignity ( no more bread crumbs or spaghetti sauce to be teased out every morning ) but hey, that takes money, so all donations please to …
