when people use the expression "MySpace killer" it ususally means they are on the wrong track.
Firstly, why would you want to kill MySpace, why compete against it? Why not produce a network that does something different?
Secondly, do you really think the Google brand name can create a huge social network? I don't. It will be a little company with some interesting technology and radically different features.

I wrote about precisely this issue a few days ago. But I think you might be surprised where I take the idea.

I completely agree.

I started my social networking on MySpace, felt overwhelmed and left it, then did Yahoo 360. I like it but that also is limited. Only 200 'friends' but they've added labels now and I'm sure will continue to improve.

Since then have joined several more and gone back to MySpace.

What do I really long for?

ONE social networking space that I could just concentrate on. Skip the skipping around as it were....

Google has developed a new Google Blogger blogging platform that allows users to use labels and change around blog layouts IF hosted on blogger.

Take it to the next level... most webmasters want to host their own blogs, so they use WP. I LOVE Blogger! I started with Blogger from 2004 and everytime I visit WP because I want to be able to label and whatever, I end up rolling eyes and closing the page.

If they add the same new blogger-hosted features to user-hosted blogs, WP is dead! NO need for all those whatever-they-call them to make WP work! ;-)

It's the same principle with the social networking idea you posit here. I agree Google is perfectly poised for this.

Take the next step Google... DO it!

Thanks for the great post!!

Orkut is alright but by no means a MySpace killer. Have you spent some time on there? Unfortunately it's filled with Spammers and Google's Orkut team spends no time fixing that problem, from what it seems.

YouTube is definitely the MySpace killer but by "killer" I'm simply referring to "taking away a large chunk of traffic". This is why Google purchased YouTube. They realize that they screwed up with Orkut in the past and it's simply too late at this point to chase the big dog. YouTube on the other hand is now becoming the big dog :-)
